The Beginner's Aquarium

Pets are the love of life for many people. However, in the hustle and bustle lifestyle, we couldn’t show a proper care for any pets at home resulting in no pets. It’s always important to have a lively environment at home than the gadget life. I, being one of the pet lovers for dogs, birds and many more, couldn’t find space in my flat for all these to play and no time for regular care and do frequent travels out of town. I decided to have a fish tank at home due to afore mentioned reasons.

How friendly is the fish tank?

  • Fits at any place in home (even a large tank).
  • Colourful for eyes to watch; especially for kids.
  • Easy to care.
  • Easy maintenance and cleaning of tank.
  • Very friendly in no-pets apartments (no noise of fish and no complaints).
  • Stress buster post work.
  • Fishes can survive during your 15 days of vacation too.
  • Easy feeding and no special cooking.

How to set up the tank?

I would suggest buying all the equipments of tank with a good quality as it is going to make living beings survive in a closed space.

Glass Tank:

You can choose to buy the normal glued glass tank or molded fiber glass tank. You can choose your required tank size from usual 1 to 3 feet for home or larger than 3 feet which is mostly suitable for commercial places. The glass tank would cost 500 to 1000 INR and the fiber tank would cost 4000 to 15,000 INR for the mentioned size range.

Aquarium Filter:

I see this as heart of the fish tank. Filter is mandatory to have in a fish tank considering health of the fishes. It is usually the sponge filter along with motor. I would suggest for a recycle filter which keeps recycling water in the tank and sponge can be removed and washed easily as it stays in a separate filter box. The cost of the filter will be around 500 to 700 INR depending on the tank size.

Aquarium Heater:

This heater is best to use in cold places but can be used in hot places too during monsoon season. Anyways, the heater goes auto off when it reaches the fixed temperature and restarts when temperature goes low again. Thanks to the thermostat which gives ‘no worry’ always. The heater has a range of temperatures which makes it useful for our convenience to adjust temperature as per the atmospheric conditions and this costs 200 to 300 INR depending on tank size and watts of heater.

Aquarium LED tube lights:

Choose the light wisely not to feel eye strain or blur effect of varying colour visibility. I prefer dual colour LED with white and blue lights which makes a natural look in tank and this costs 200 to 300 INR again on tank size and colour of the LED tube light. Light is necessary to get a clear view inside water and helps in photosynthesis of water plants you keep inside tank.

Tank Bottom Setup:

You can choose any small to medium sized pebbles you want to make the bottom surface for fishes. Choose more of a natural pebbles and top most layer covered by colourful and decorative stones to make your tank look elegant. You need to make bottom surface for 2 inch with pebbles to keep excreta and other dust settled down. You’ll get pebbles at INR 50 to 80 per kg. For example, you’ll need 12 kg of small pebbles to make 2 inch surface in a 2 feet tank. You can also make up the bottom surface with soil which costs INR 200 to 300 per kg.

Aquarium decors/toys:

You get treated wood which is good for tank that costs 1000 to 2000 INR; but remember you should never use any untreated wood in tank. Decors like artificial plants, grass, buildings and toys are your own choice. The fishes will play and hide around these toys. You can even take the bubble making toys with a motor to make those water bubbles.

Aquarium Plants:

Most of the fishes eat plants in the tank though they get fed with solid foods. So, make sure to get some fish plants as a décor and food. If you have a pebble bottom, you can use ‘Hydrilla’ plants in the tank and make sure to place stones on plants to avoid floating on surface. In case of soil bottom tank, you can keep the rooted aquarium plants with a carbon dioxide cylinder connected to the tank.

Tank Lids:

Lids are generally the same design making it open partial to drop food for the fishes. The opening supports multiple wires of tank accessories to plug in the socket.
